Abbie May Mclardie
Abbie Mclardie is a Dundee based artists who used her artwork to navigate her experiences with the world around her. She has used meditation as a part of her process and creates paintings sculptured and drawings which demonstrate this who works in a range of mediums. She is in the final year of her Fine Art degree at DJCAD where she specialises in watercolour painting. Her current practice focuses on repetition and meditation, alongside process based work that involves traveling and gathering. Her degree show showcases a series of Rock portraits. The rocks have been collected from beaches across the east coast of Scotland. The subjects of these paintings were sourced from these beaches as the beaches themselves act as: “one of very few places I feel truly at peace”. Abbie communicates the peace she feels at these locations to her audience through the mindful process of painting and repainting and re-repainting these portraits of rocks. Utilising her semi-abstract style as a grounding process as she relocates and re-illustrates her subjects from the beach. By learning and practicing this method of painting she allows the mindful practice to ground her. This practice of meditation and peacefulness both ties into and contrasts with her dissertation, which is, when boiled down, an exhibition which allows space for female rage. The artist feels women and specifically Women Artists are rarely given time or space to explore the depths of their emotion, their anger and their rage. The juxtaposition of raging performances and experiencing mindful practices are both radical ways to reclaim space and encourage others to be so bold as to look after themselves.
